Closing Order imposed in bid to tackle anti-social behaviour in town centre
Wednesday, 11 January 2012
A 1.30am closing order has been imposed on fast food outlets operating at William Street, Dungannon in a bid to alleviate early morning anti-social behaviour in the area.
During a special meeting of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council, one resident alleged their "human rights were being interfered with" due to revellers congregating in the area before "dancing on roofs", "urinating on houses" and embarking on "verbal abuse".
The trader concerned has however said that this loss of business will jeopardise jobs as from 1.30am to 2am is the "peak trading period".
The traders contended a Closing Order would not solve problems in the area, claiming people congregate in the area when vacating nearby pubs and night clubs.
At an earlier meeting, PSNI representatives agreed that there were issues in the area and recommended that a Closing Order be put on fast food outlets, but were not sure what time to state.
At a recent meeting of the Council to hear opinions of complainants and traders, councillors heard from one resident that they were putting up with attacks every weekend.
Claims were also made that a resident had suffered financially in securing their home with grills on the windows and protection on the roof and that property was now "unsaleable".
A 21-day appeal date, during which there was a right to appeal the Council's decision, has elapsed.
If any appeal is lodged, a Closing Order has no standing until the appeal is heard.
A Council spokesperson said they could not make any further comment at this present time.
