TWO LOCAL men appeared in court yesterday, Monday, charged with the armed robbery of a filling station in Dungannon at the
weekend.
Austin Creggan, 47 of Park View Pomeroy and Desmond John Joseph Hamill, 38, of Springdale Estate, Dungannon are charged with robbing The Glen Service Station on the Ballygawley Road of £5,700 on Saturday night. The pair are also charged with carrying a firearm or an imitation firearm.
Creggan and Hamill said nothing and refused to stand during a brief hearing at Enniskillen Magistrate's Court, during which there was a large Police presence, but gave their thumbs up to applause coming from the public gallery.
Police have meanwhile been commended for their swift response.
The service station was held up at approximately 10.30pm in what Dungannon Councillor Maurice Morrow called "a dreadful experience for staff".
Praising Police for their quick response, DUP MLA Lord Morrow told the Courier: "I was made aware of this incident just before 1am on Sunday morning, when I am told armed men held up a petrol station at Ballygawley Road in the town.
“This must have been a dreadful experience for staff, but Police appended and arrested two persons nearby. A number of houses have been searched as a result."
Continued Lord Morrow: "The PSNI have stated a dissident republican link is being explored and this comes as no surprise as such thugs in our society believe they have the right to disrupt everyone else's lives for their own self-indulgence.
“I am calling on anyone with information on who these thugs are, and what their odious plans entail, to make it immediately available to Police."
Creggan and Hamill were remanded in custody at Maghaberry to appear, via videolink, at a sitting of Dungannon Courthouse on February 8.
Police confirmed detectives are investigating a potential link to dissident activity following the armed robbery.
