Dungannon man accused of making ‘Iraq-style’ bomb
Wednesday, 15 February 2012
A DUNGANNON man appearing in court on explosives charges has been accused of making a deadly device never before known to exist in Northern Ireland.
Patrick Carty, 32, of Springdale Estate, appeared in Enniskillen Magistrate's Court yesterday, Monday, charged with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property.
He was arrested in Coalisland on Sunday in connection with an IED - improvised exposive device - allegedly found in a field at Killybracken Road, Dungannon, on April 22, 2011.
IEDs are commonly found in Iraq and Afghanistan, but have not been known to be used in Northern Ireland before.
A Detective Sergeant told Enniskillen Magistrate's Court the defendant's prints were found on a black plastic liner wrapped around the device.
Bail was opposed and refused on the grounds of risk of interfering with witnesses.
Supporters applauded as Carty left the dock.
He is due appear in court again in Dungannon next month.
