Multi-lingual street signs mooted thumbnailA road sign in both Portuguese and English, suggested by Mid-Ulster Council.

MID-ULSTER could soon have street signs in a multitude of languages, according to Council plans.

Signs are likely to not just be in English shortly.

A number of other languages have been suggested for inclusion on street signs if a sufficient number of people living in those areas request as such.

Mid-Ulster Council have prepared plans which will see street signs put in Irish, Portuguese, Lithuanian, Polish, or any other language which is requested by residents in that area.

All suggested signs put forward in Council-prepared papers place the additional language above that of the English name of the area.

Suggested name changes in Council papers would add to Cunninghams Lane the Portuguese equivalent of Beco Cunninghams.

It also includes the Irish alternative of Tonnaght Heights as Arda Thonnaigh.

Both include the additional language above the English and in a different typeface.

It is also understood the additional language is to be put in a different colour to the English, which will be in black.

All signs will include town names beneath each language.

The plans have been brought before Mid-Ulster District Council's Environment Committee, and are due for further discussion in relation to colouring of writing.

Discussions are also ongoing in relation to what constitutes sufficient local support to place additional languages on street signs.

It is understood that any proposal would require just 25 per cent of residents to respond to the consultation, with just over half of those required to vote in favour of a change.

This means that additional languages could be added with just 13 per cent of residents in favour. The same rules would also apply to removing a language from a road sign.
