HOSPITAL TO LOSE SERVICES thumbnailChildren’s dental & ENT operations are moving from the South Tyrone Hospital.

THE services on offer at Dungannon's South Tyrone Hospital will be reduced in the near future, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust has confirmed.

In what will come as a blow to Mid-Ulster residents, South Tyrone Hospital will see its weekly children's dental surgery transfer to Daisy Hill Hospital early next year.

A spokesperson for the Trust also confirmed that the "small number" of children's ear nose and throat (ENT) operations that are carried out at the Dungannon hospital, as part of the main ENT list, will also be transferred to Daisy Hill.

The cost of the new paediatric developments at Craigavon and Daisy Hill are set to cost the Trust £15 million and the Courier understands these changes are set to affect around 30 children who would have otherwise attended South Tyrone Hospital.

At present South Tyrone Hospital offers a full range of outpatient services. Day surgery and radiology services are provided on site and include an ambulatory paediatric service, ECG Department, Ophthalmology and Audiology services.

Children's services are also provided by staff based at South Tyrone Hospital and includes paediatric clinics and an ambulatory paediatric service.

A Child and Mental Health Services team and Social Services Child Care team are also based at the hospital. The Mental Health Support and Recovery Team, Primary Mental Health Care, Psychology Services and Carland House Resource Centre are also located on the site.

A Minor Injuries Unit is also open in Dungannon from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6pm Saturday to Sunday.

Explaining the decision to remove the children's dental surgery and ENT services from South Tyrone Hospital, a spokesperson for the Trust said: ""The Southern Health and Social Care Trust carried out a major consultation on children's (paediatric) hospital services in 2010.

"The consultation looked at how to provide better and safer care for children, and how to best meet the standards of care for paediatric surgery.

"The Trust currently provides paediatric surgery in three main areas - general surgery, ENT and dental services.

"Under 'Changing for Children', the majority of planned paediatric surgery will take place in Daisy Hill Hospital, in a purpose-built unit, which includes a theatre suite. This unit is currently under construction within the main block on the Daisy Hill site.

"Emergency of unplanned surgery will be primarily carried out in Craigavon Hospital. A new children's unit is currently being built on the site.

"Children's out-patient services, and ambulatory paediatric services will remain in South Tyrone."
