Stewartstown Baptist Church Twelfth attack thumbnailStewartstown Baptist Church.

A PETROL bomb has been thrown at the front door of a Baptist Church in Stewartstown.

The church was attacked overnight on Wednesday last (12th July).

Police said a glass bottle containing a flammable liquid was thrown at Stewartstown Baptist Church during the night. It did not ignite and no damage was caused to the door or the church generally.

SDLP Councillor Malachy Quinn said he was "very shocked" to learn of the attack.

Speaking to the Courier the Torrent representative said: "I completely condemn this stupid and pathetic attack. Everyone in the town I have been talking to is disgusted by this act which is only trying to stir up some nonsense which doesn't exist here.

"The people of Stewartstown live together in peace and every 12th passes peacefully and with respect shown by both sides of the community.

"This year there was a funeral on at the same time as the parade. On approaching the house the bands stopped playing their music, took off their hats and walked in silence as a show of respect.

"That is how things should be right across the north but that respect was not shown by these idiots who carried out the attack.

"This attack does not in anyway reflect the thoughts of the 99.9 per cent of people in the area."

Ulster Unionist Councillor and Chair of the PCSP Kenny Reid also condemned the attack.

"This is an atrocious incident that shouldn't have happened," he said. "No attack should be carried out on any church anywhere and I urge anyone with any information about the incident to contact the Police, either directly or via the Crimestoppers number."

The PSNI have also appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
