A WORLD class race track has been given the green light to come to Coalisland.

Planners at Mid-Ulster District Council has recommended approval of the ambitious plans for the track to occupy the site of the former clay pits in the town.

As revealed exclusively in last week's Courier, the new track is expected to generate upwards of 1,500 jobs and has already attracted provisional bookings for some of motorsport's most prestigious racing series.

Manna Development Ltd is the firm behind the scheme, entitled 'Lake Torrent Motorsport Complex', which they state will, "within three years, become the leading visitor attraction in Mid-Ulster, providing significant additional revenues for accommodation, catering and services throughout the region".

Three race tracks are to be included in the 163 acre complex to suit different forms of motorsport.

And it has been confirmed that already provisional bookings have been made to bring British Superbike, World Super Bikes and British Touring Car Championships events to Coalisland.

The site isn't just going to cater for motorsport enthusiasts, with an industrial development housing upwards on 40 businesses on the site part of the plans.

It is also stated that "upwards on 1,000 people during the building phase" will be employed, with a further 350 casual jobs per large race weekend.

A planned Motorsport Centre of Excellence will create a further 15 jobs, a creche will create six jobs, while over 70 jobs are expected to be created in the industrial development.

The Centre of Excellence is also to be used to help train 100 unemployed or economically inactive people in the Mid-Ulster area per year.

The facility is designed to operate all year round and will go before the Council's Planning Committee tonight (Tuesday) for approval.
