Wednesday, 23 August 2017

THE number of parking tickets issued in Mid-Ulster in the first half of this year has been revealed.

In the first six months of the year a total of 1,431 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued.

PCNs more commonly known as parking tickets, are issued for vehicles found to be breaking parking restrictions by traffic wardens.

In the first half of the year, Mid-Ulster's parking ticket hotspot was Cookstown where 580 parking tickets were issued, roughly 97 tickets a month.

Motorists received 411 parking tickets in the first six months of the year an average of 69 per month while Magherafelt drivers were issued with fines 399 times an average of 33 times a month.

Elsewhere in Mid-Ulster, motorist in Clogher were issued with 19 parking tickets across the six months. In Fivemiletown there were 14 tickets issued between January and June and in the same time span there were only eight tickets issued in Moy.

The towns of Aughnacloy, Coalisland and Donaghmore escaped any fines throughout the six months.

However, these figures are skewed significantly by the disproportionate deployment of traffic attendants across the district.

Traffic wardens are no longer patrolling Aughnacloy and Donaghmore.

The decision to withdraw from these villages came after a warden was forced to flee Coalisland last November.

The warden on patrol at the time described how carloads of youths followed the wardens around the town and told them "not to come back".

"We were subject to large amounts of abuse from members of the public, shopkeepers and people traveling though the town in vehicles," the warden told the Department at the time.

Coalisland is not included in the list of towns and villages published by the Department for Infrastructure.

Across Northern Ireland 43,493 tickets have been issued so far this year.
