AMBITIOUS plans to rejuvenate Coalisland town centre have been revealed by Mid-Ulster District Council and it includes plans for one way traffic in the town!

Consultation has begun on the concepts designed by WDR and RT Taggart Architects and Engineers for the 2.75 million scheme.

The proposals will, if approved, bring new high quality stone paving, street furniture, tree planting, signage, lighting and drainage to the town centre.

Both options will see Main Street become a one way street. Work will also be carried out on the Square, Lineside, Dungannon Road, Stewartstown Road, Barrack Square, Station Road and Washingbay Road. A new bus lay-by, loading bay and disabled parking spaces are also included in the proposals.

The proposals show that Main Street will have wider footways, angled parking, new landscape areas and public event spaces, new loading bays and additional pedestrian links between Main Street and Cornhill.

Meanwhile, the Square will see its slip road removed with vehicular access restricted to the car park entrance only.

Speaking about the plans, Councillor Malachy Quinn welcomed the plan but encouraged everyone to come along and have their say on the proposals.

"It is a very ambitious scheme. If everything is put in place it will be a drastic change. There will be changes to the road layout, it is very exciting for the town centre but we still need to hear from businesses.

"The plans are there for everyone to see and have their say and hopefully the whole community can let the developers know what they want from our town." His words were echoed by Councillor Joe O'Neill who said: "I totally welcome the proposals, I just hope the developers will listen to the people of the town and deliver what they want.

"The town has become run down and neglected over the last number of years and this scheme will give it a much needed lift."

The design concepts will be on display in the library of the Cornmill Heriatge Centre and the Western House in Coalisland from Thursday, 12th October to Tuesday, 31st October.
