A DUBLIN man who bought the car later used in the murder of Cookstown prison officer David Black has been jailed for five years for IRA membership.

Vincent Banks, 49, of Smithfield Gate Apartments, was convicted in July by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin of membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself as the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on 18th December, 2012.

Mr Black, 52, was shot dead as he drove to work at Maghaberry prison on the M1 on 1st November, 2012.

The New IRA group claimed responsibility for the killing.

Banks had denied the membership charge during his trial at Dublin's three-judge non-jury Special Criminal Court.

He had earlier been cleared of a charge of withholding information about the murder of David Black.

Sentencing Banks, the presiding judge described him as a "trusted member" of an illegal organisation.

She said his sentence would be backdated to 16th April 2016 to take account of the time he had already served in custody.

At an earlier sentencing hearing, Detective Inspector Anthony Lenehan, of the Garda Special Detective Unit, told the court that the PSNI had established a forensic link between the shooting and a Toyota Camry.

Gardai then discovered Banks had bought the car off a man in Tallaght and, when signing the log book, had used his left hand and signed the name Paul McCann, with an address on Rathgar Road in Dublin.

After Gardai spoke to the landlord of the premises, he said no resident with the name Paul McCann lived there and showed them a letter addressed to that name. It contained the car registration certificate for the Toyota Camry and Banks' right thumbprint was found on the document.

The court had also heard evidence from Chief Superintendent Gerry Russell, who believed that Banks was a member of the IRA on the date in question.
