MID-ULSTER has seen the largest increase in the number of drug seizures in the past 12 months in the whole of Northern Ireland, new figures reveal.

Drug seizure incidents in the district increased by 30 per cent in one year, latest figures released by the PSNI show.

And Cannabis is by far the most commonly seized drug by Police.

In the 12 months to 30th September, 2016 there were 230 drug seizure incidents in the Mid-Ulster Policing District.

However, that number had increased significantly to 299 in the 12 months to 30th September, 2017.

It is by some margin the largest increase in Northern Ireland, with five of the 11 Policing Districts recording drops in the number of drug seizures.

The number of drug-related arrests has also increased, but not at an equal rate to the number of seizures.

In the 12 months to the end of September this year, there were 110 arrests, compared to 102 the year before.

The prevalence of Cannabis is demonstrated by the fact that 269 of the 299 seizure incidents related to the Class B drug.

And Mid-Ulster has seen by far the largest volume of Cannabis Resin seized throughout the entirety of Northern Ireland.

Over 52kg of the substance was seized last year, over five times as much as any other area of the country, and three quarters of the entire quantity seized throughout the Province over the 12 months to 30th September this year.

There was also more than 4.5kg of Herbal Cannabis seized, 332 Cannabis plants, 107 grams of Cannabis oil and 42 Cannabis joints.

A significant quantity of the Class A drug, Cocaine, was also seized, amounting to 1.2kg, while 867 Diazepam tablets were seized.

Other drugs seized in the area include Heroin, Ecstasy and Mephedrone.
