A COOKSTOWN autobody repair technician was among the medalists at the prestigious WorldSkills 2017 competition held in the Middle-East.

Andrew Gault, an employee at the Glenn Allen Accident Repair Centre, was one of four Northern Ireland competitors who took part in the world's largest vocational skills competition in Abu Dhabi this year as part of Team UK.

WorldSkills 2017 saw young people from 77 countries travel to Abu Dhabi from October 14 - 19 to compete in 51 skill competitions.

Andrew, from Sandholes, was awarded a Bronze medal in the autobody repair section.

In total Team UK picked up seven medals at WorldSkills 2017 - 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze, as well as Medallion winners.

The 20-year-old Sandholes man described the whole WorldSkills experience as "absolutely brilliant".

He told the Courier: "Before heading off to Abu Dhabi, Team UK, comprising 34 competitors, met in London and we were given a reception in the House of Commons. We spent 10 days in Abu Dhabi and the competition was extremely competitive.

During our time off, we enjoyed sightseeing in Abu Dhabi and treks out to the desert." Andrew trained with Riverpark Training in Mallusk and is employed at Glenn Allen Accident Repair Centre, based in Cookstown and he expressed thanks to both firms for their invaluable help and support. He also extended thanks to Frazer Minskip, his Team UK training manager, in the build-up to WorldSkills 2017.

Andrew is the second employee at Glenn Allen Accident Repair Centre to represent Team UK at WorldSkills. Glenn Allen Bodyshop Manager Gary Greer was a member of Team UK at the WorldSkills finals in Leipzig, Germany in 2013. Also on the UK team in Germany was Cookstown carpenter Philip Glasgow.

Glenn Allen Accident Repair Centre Director Philip Allen and Bodyshop Manager Gary Greer congratulated Andrew on his WorldSkills achievement and said he had done himself and Mid-Ulster proud.
