Split result for Towers

Wednesday, 15 November 2017

IT was a weekend of split results as the Junior Towers teams hosted Star on Saturday and travelled to Belfast to face Phoenix on Sunday.

On Saturday the U14 girls continued their winning ways as they easily cruised to a victory over the developing Belfast Star team.

The same could not be said for the Towers boys however, as the visitors took demand of the match from the start.

While Towers continued to work hard, the deficit was too much to overcome and so Star also took a win from the day.

On Sunday, Towers U14 and U16 boys took to the road to Belfast, this time to face Phoenix.

U14 boys were the first on the bill, and were determined to not let the events of the day before reoccur. Towers worked extremely hard to match Phoenix in both defense and offense and the hosts were leading by a single point in the first - the second quarter was much the same, though the hosts managed to edge out a two basket lead, to show a half time score of Phoenix 20 Towers 16.

As is usually the case, it's the tale of the third quarter and this time it was Phoenix who came out on a flyer, determined to stamp their authority on the match, which they did and then ran out the fourth quarter to take the win.

U16 boys were next up on the schedule and the match started out much as the u14s, though these two teams couldn't break the deadlock and were tied at the half at 32.

While the first half had been about match MVP and Towers top point scorer M McGleenon, with 20 points for the game, Phoenix stepped up the defense, which only meant creating opportunities for Towers P O'Neill to take charge with 16 points for the game, along with D Mallon who contributed 10 points.

In addition, Towers also stepped up their own defence, with a completely foul free third quarter meant that Phoenix weren't given any extra opportunities for free points, to allow Towers to run out the victors, Towers 60 Phoenix 54.
