Carland go top with Dungannon victory

ON Monday, 13 November Dungannon Indoor travelled to Carland for a league match.

In the first set of games Carland got off to a good start on mat two, skipped by Lester Burnside, winning four shots.

Good opening bowls by Marion Davidson helped put pressure on Dungannon but was matched by Anna Whittle and followed up by Noel Robinson.

Dungannon won the second end with good accurate shots by Dungannon's skip Jim Haydock.

The remaining ends were won by Carland to leave the final score 11-2 in Carland's favour.

It was a closer game on mat one. Frank Kelly produced some excellent lead bowls for Carland but were knocked out on several occasions by Dungannon's Ian Hobson.

Carland's third Glenn Murphy and skip Mark Kennedy met their match against Dungannon's third Jim Archer and skip Ernie Watterson.

Ernie produced some excellent drawing shots along with some accurate weighted shots to take Dungannon ahead in the first and second end.

Low scores throughout the game showed the number of accurate shots giving many tight heads of bowls. The final score ended 6-4 in Dungannon's favour.

The second set of games got underway with Carland winning the first end on both mats.

On mat one, Roy Kelly, who was skipping for Carland, took his team to a 5-4 win over Dung annon.

The win was only decided on the final end.

With accurate drawing shots from Dungannon's skip Ian Hobson, Carland were unable to get a comfortable lead.

On mat two a close game was had by both teams. Julia Burnside, leading for Carland, drew some great touchers but was equalled by Dungannon's lead player.

Carland were one shot ahead going into the final end but excellent play by Derek Robinson and James Shaw saw Dungannon gain four shots to win the game 7-4.

After tea, play resumed for the final two sets of games.

On mat one, Mark Kennedy, skipping for Carland was up against Ernie Watterson for Dungannon. Carland opened the scoring in the first end with one shot.

Carland managed to edge ahead helped by some accurate drawing shots from their skip.

However, Jim Archer and Ernie Watterson fought back with some great bowls to keep Carland's lead curtailed.

The final score ended 8-2 to Carland.

Mat two saw both teams evenly matched and Dungannon certainly put Carland's home advantage to the test.

Cedric Stewart, playing third along with Jim Haydock skipping for Dungannon, tried everything to put Dungannon ahead but Lester Burnside, skipping for Carland, was able to edge ahead in what was a very close game with only single shots being scored in most ends, with the game finishing 5-2.

The last two games of the night got underway. On mat 1, Roy Kelly for Carland met Ernie Watterson again.

On mat two, Allen Hall for Carland played against James Shaw for the second time.

The opening ends on both mats got off to a good start for Carland with five shots being scored on mat one and three shots on mat two.

This was short lived as both Dungannon teams fought back to score highly in the following end. All players seemed to be on form with many touchers being had and many tight heads of bowls being played.

Roy Kelly won his game by seven shots and on mat two James Shaw gained a shot in the final end to win his game by one shot.
