Teebane marked 26 years after atrocity. thumbnailCedric Blackbourne lays a floral tribute during a Memorial Service held on Sunday marking the 26th Anniversary of the Teebane bombing.

THE 26th anniversary of the Teebane atrocity, in which eight workmen were murdered by the IRA and six others were injured, was marked on Sunday afternoon with a service at the roadside.

Relatives and friends of the workmen killed and injured in what has become known as the Teebane massacre, gathered at the roadside memorial, between Cookstown and Omagh, for the service to remember their loved ones and to lay flowers at the scene.

David Harkness, aged 23, Gary Bleeks, aged 35, Cecil Cardwell, aged 37 (all from Cookstown), Robert Dunseath, aged 25 (Magherafelt), Richard McConnell, aged 38 (Doagh), Nigel McKee, aged 22 and Bobby Irons, aged 61 (both from Ballymena) were all killed instantly, while Oswald Gilchrist, aged 44 (Magherafelt), the driver, died four days later.

Six other workers were seriously injured in the IRA attack.

The workers were on their way home from work at Lisanelly Army Base in Omagh when their minibus was blown up at the Teebane crossroads, between Cookstown and Omagh, at around teatime on Friday 17th January, 1992.

It was one of the worst atrocities of the Troubles. All worked for the Antrim firm Karl Construction.

The IRA's East Tyrone brigade admitted responsibility for the attack.

Relatives and friends of the murdered workmen and those injured attend the roadside memorial service each year.

Sunday's anniversary service was conducted by the Rev Ivor Smith, who has conducted every Anniversary Service since the 1992 atrocity.

Twenty-six years on from the atrocity, no-one has been charged.
