Moygashel proprietors in £1m tax fraud probe thumbnailMoygashel Branch

THE owners of a coffee shop with a branch at Moygashel's Linen Green are being investigated for an alleged £1 million tax fraud.

Brothers Damien, 49, and Adrian Garvey, 47, are from Newry and operate the Synge & Byrne coffee shop at the Linen Green.

More than 120 officers from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs conducted searches on two private and 16 business addresses last week and seized computers and business records.

Two men, aged 49 and 47, and a 39-year-old woman, all from the Newry area, were arrested and then bailed as part of an ongoing investigation.

Damien and Adrian Garvey head up the BWL Group, which operates the Synge & Byrne shops and manages all the O'Brien's sandwich outlets in Northern Ireland.

Following the raids, the brothers' solicitor issued a statement, saying: "Our client is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and is hopeful they will return to normal business in the coming days.

"This investigation relates to accounting technicalities particular to the café/outlet industry, and our client is confident the findings will ultimately vindicate them."

Several of the shops were closed for a time last Wednesday, but all have since been re-opened.
