JUST under a quarter of pupils in Cookstown's two main primary schools do not have the necessary language skills to participate fully in school life.
Across Cookstown Primary School and Holy Trinity Primary School, 23.6 per cent of pupils are classified as newcomers by the Department of Education.
A newcomer pupil is one who "has enrolled in a school but who does not have the satisfactory language skills to participate fully in the school curriculum".
Of the 694 pupils enrolled at Holy Trinity Primary School, 200 are classified as newcomers.
That equates to 28.8 per cent of students enrolled there.
The number of newcomer pupils in Cookstown Primary School is 16.3 per cent, or 81 of the school's 498 pupils.
One school in the Magherafelt area also has a relatively large number of newcomer pupils.
Holy Family Primary School in the town has 160 of 597 pupils classified as newcomers, which equates to 26.8 per cent.
In the Mid-Ulster area, a number of other schools have comparatively high levels of newcomer pupils.
Among these are Coagh Primary School at 10.6 per cent (10 of 94 pupils), St Patrick's Primary School, Moneymore at 12.8 per cent (11 of 86 pupils), St Mary's Primary School, Pomeroy at 9.8 per cent (18 of 184 pupils), Phoenix Integrated Primary School at 9.8 per cent (22 of 225 pupils) and St Mary's Primary School, Draperstown at 11 per cent (23 of 209 pupils).
There are significantly less pupils with a newcomer background at secondary level.
