‘Significant’ cash sum taken in Pomeroy shop robbery thumbnailThe Shop in Pomeroy

A SHOP worker in Pomeroy was left shaken following a robbery in the village last Thursday night.

The young woman, aged in her 20s, was the only member of staff on duty in Connolly's Shop on the Cavanakeeran Road when a masked man entered the premises.

The man then motioned for the young woman to empty the till into his bag before leaving the shop.

It is understood the perpetrator didn't say a word during the terrifying ordeal and got away with a significant sum of cash.

The robbery took place at about 9.25pm and the man, who was dressed in dark clothing and then fled the scene. The young woman was not injured during the incident.

Residents of the village expressed their shock at the incident, with some suspecting the perpetrator had local knowledge of the shop.

The robbery took place shortly after the adjoining garage closed up for the night, meaning there was only one person on the site.

The owner of the business was also on holiday at the time.

One resident, who didn't wish to be named, told the Courier: "You'd wonder if whoever did it perhaps knew something of the comings and goings there.

”You would maybe think they knew there was only going to be one person there at the time, which would maybe make them think they'd be able to get away with it."

Police are appealing to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area around this time, or who may have any information that could assist with police enquiries to contact Detectives in Cookstown on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1350 of 15/03/18.

Information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous.
