Coalisland race track delayed start fear thumbnail

CONCERNS are growing that the start may be delayed for an ambitious new multi-million pound race track on the outskirts of Coalisland.
The new race track, based on the old clay pits, was due to be up and running by early spring and was set to host a World Superbike event next year.
However, an apparent lack of progress on the track has caused fears to grow that the track will not be ready in time for the event.
The Courier understands that work had hit a snag as tests were ongoing with boreholes in relation to old mine shafts on the site, which has held up work considerably.
Numerous issues with planners are also believed to have hindered work from progressing as desired.
It has been reported that World Superbike bosses and officials at Donington race track, which previously hosted the UK round of the championships, have met to discuss potential contingency plans should Lake Torrent not be ready in time.
Lake Torrent race track is part of a very ambitious development, to be carried out over several phases.
Last September, Mid-Ulster District Council granted planning permission for the first phase of work at Lake Torrent which includes the race circuit, pits, medical centre, restaurant, hospitality suites, six business units and a crèche, as well as a new public ring road to bypass the town and facilitate easy access in and out of the circuit.
It had also been envisaged that a hotel would be built at the site to help begin to accommodate the tens of thousands race fans expected over a race weekend in Coalisland.
The Lake Torrent Circuit is to be 3.6km (2.2 miles) in length, featuring 12 corners with a width of 12-15m and elevations of +/-30m, accompanied by full supporting facilities.
