Dungannon Tigers brush aside Rangers
Wednesday, 19 November 2008
Dungannon Tigers 6. Rectory Rangers 3.
THE Tigers extended their lead at the top of the table with a comfortable 6-3 win at home over Portadown outfit Rectory Rangers. The Dungannon side were 3-0 up at half-time and should have won by a greater scoreline only for some lapses in the Tigers defence and complacency generally in the second half.
The home side began well and probably should have been well ahead before the first goal finally arrived courtesy of a rare run into the opposition box by midfielder Eoin Donnelly who dispatched his shot low into the bottom corner of the Rectory goal. Not long after, Graham Jarvis scored with a fine diving header after superb work from Brian Somerville out on the left hand side. Rectory at this stage were offering very little and the third goal arrived via the head of centre back Emmett Stringer who was dominating proceedings throughout.
An injury not long into the second half to Dungannon's Peter Devlin seemed to unsettle the home side. Devlin, after another lay off earlier in the season had been playing extremely well of late and the Tigers missed his ball passing as Rectory began to see more of the ball in midfield and out wide. They scored on the hour mark to make it 3-1 but a fantastic free-kick from Sean O'Hagan 20 yards out restored the Tigers' three goal cushion.
Again an innocuous looking cross from a Rectory free-kick went unchallenged and somehow found its way into the net past the outstretched arm of 'keeper Luke O'Donnell.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Brian Somerville scored to again put three goals between the sides but once more Rectory scored when after a shot that wasn't closed down by the Dungannon defence, the ball hit off the unlucky Gareth Hughes and into the net. Graham Jarvis scored his second of the game on the 85 minute mark when he lobbed the Rectory 'keeper to make the final score 6-3.
Next week the Tigers are away to the unbeaten Armagh Rovers. Training continues at Loughview on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm.
Finally, congratulations to Club captain Garteh Hughes who has recently passed his final accountancy exams. No doubt, Dungannon Tigers will be counting on Gareth to lead them to promotion this season.
