Gallant St Macartanís thwarted in title bid thumbnailSt Macartan ladies who staged a brave bid for honours in the Ulster senior club championship final.

THIS was one of those games when the closing scoreline does not tell the entire tale of what transpired throughout a fluctuating hour of football.

St Macartan's...1-6
Donaghmoyne...2-12

Double Tyrone ladies football senior champions, St Macartan's, may ultimately have missed out on Saturday but they nevertheless staged a very spirited display against pre-match favourites Donaghmoyne of Monaghan.

The Clogher Valley based team had won both the county championship and league titles this season, backing those victories up with two good wins in the Ulster club competition to reach Saturday's Ulster title decider.

A well prepared Galbally venue hosted as St Macartan's strove to experience a change in fortunes at Ulster final level. Donaghmoyne were bidding to add another Provincial success to their tally but the Monaghan girls were certainly asked plenty of serious questions by the Tyrone team here.

St Macartan's actually created sufficient chances to have altered the match script but they were unlucky in terms of finishing such chances, with goal openings coming at either end of the first half but Donaghmoyne survived. By the break, Donaghmoyne were somewhat fortunate to be two points up at 1-3 to 0-4. Catriona McConnell netted but it required two tries after her first penalty effort had been superbly saved by St Macartan's keeper Niamh McKenna.

Joline Donnelly and Chloe McCaffrey subsequently sent over scores before half-time for a St Macartan's side working very hard and playing well but just not taking enough of their opportunities in range of the posts.

Catriona McConnell converted two frees and one point in open play to push her side five points clear not long after the restart but St Macartan's showed their mettle by battling bravely back into contention.

Joline Donnelly drilled over a point and at the midway phase of the last half Chloe McCaffrey rattled home a fine St Macartan's goal. They soon had Donaghmoyne backpedalling again with another dangerous attack which nearly yielded a goal that would have put the Clogher Valley girls in front.

Donaghmoyne, however, steadied the situation and Niamh Callan blasted in an unstoppable shot to the net nearing 50 minutes.

Some yellow cards were dished out for both sides as the half unfolded but McConnell and Louise Kerly tagged on point braces apiece as the Monaghan side finally repelled a gallant effort on behalf of the St Macartan's.

St Macartan Scorers: Chloe McCaffrey 1-2, Joline Donelly 0-3, Colleen McQuaid 0-1
