A TALENTED 12-year-old Coalisland footballer is heading off to Barcelona to take part in a prestigious international tournament.

Liam Corr (pictured), who plays for Coalisland Young Stars, has been selected to take part in the competition hosted by the Spanish giants.

The St Joseph's College pupil will compete for Team USA at the SCB Escola event after being selected from 1,200 aspiring footballers at a camp during the summer.

If he makes a good impression on the scouts at the tournament, he could be following in the footsteps of the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

And, at just 12, he has been chosen to compete for the U14 competition, which will be held in Barcelona from 6-17 April, 2017.

Liam is a prolific striker with his hometown team and was at it again on Saturday, bagging a treble and earning the man of the match award.

And mum Stella says she is delighted to see the opportunity her son has been presented with.

“He went over to America in the summer and he did really well," she says.

“There were six Barcelona scouts at the cup and they spoke very highly of him.

“I'm absolutely over the moon.

“As his mum, I always think he's good but then you think you're just being a mum.

“Then when something like this happens you just can't believe it."

Making this chance even better for Liam is the fact that he already is a Barcelona fan.

“Liam just eats, sleeps and breathes football," says Stella.

“He doesn't go anywhere without a football and he's a big Barcelona fan so it just makes it all the better for him.

“I just want to thank his coach at Coalisland Young Stars, Noel Sweeney, he has been absolutely fantastic with Liam."

However, sending Liam to the competition is expensive, and Stella is asking for some help to raise the 3,500 needed to fund Liam's trip.

Stella has set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who would like to help out.
