Dungannon men fall at final hurdle thumbnailDungannon captain James McMahon dives across the line.

THERE was to be no Ulster Senior Cup joy for Dungannon at the Kingspan Stadium on Thursday night.

Ballynahinch...27
Dungannon...10

Despite edging the first half, the Tyrone team missed a total of four penalty attempts that left Ballynahinch leading 12-3 at the break.

In the second half, two yellow cards for Dungannon forwards gave the County Down men an immediate advantage and they ran out 27-12 winners.

Dungannon put down an early marker at the first two scrums.

The Sinnamon brothers, Glen and Steven, along with hooker Karl Egan, earned a penalty at the second.

Alas the shot from the tee was missed and it was Hinch who broke the deadlock on 12 minutes.

Connor Phillips tidied up a scrappy lineout and his break paved the way for Callum Irvine to score.

Jake Finlay and Paul Armstrong both missed penalties before the latter opened Dungannon's account midway through the half.

Hinch then drilled a ball to the corner but excellent Dungannon defence kept them at bay before Andrew Harper took advantage of a lucky bounce just before the break. Chris Quinn converted.

The two 'sinbinnings' of Mark Riddell and Glen Sinnamon disrupted Dungannon's plans in the third quarter and Hinch were able to add tries per Chris Orr and Stuart Morrow on 47 and 65 minutes respectively. Quinn converted the second to make it 27-3.

Minutes later, James McMahon crashed over for Armstrong to convert but the Senior Cup was already on its way to Ballymacarne Park.

Ballynahinch deserved their win on the night but the match was much closer than the score suggests. Best wishes to them in the semi-final of the Bateman Cup.
