Dungannon lose right Royal derby encounter thumbnailJames Watson in action for Royal School Dungannon.

IT WAS a case of so near and yet so far for Dungannon Royal School at the Armstrong Field on Saturday morning.

Dungannon RS...7
Armagh RS...17

The third round clash of the two Royals in a local derby did not disappoint.

Just two points separated the sides until the final 10 minutes when Armagh Royal produced a late surge to run out deserved 17-7 winners.

The visitors were first to strike and following a lively start left-winger, Peter Wilson dived over and Armagh Royal went five points clear.

RSD quickly settled and some fine midfield tackling per the two Aarons, Perry and McCammon kept Armagh at bay.

In one RSD attack, Adam Evans was unlucky to miss out with a strike from the tee.

The hosts kept the momentum going with James Gamble, Josh Fegan and Calvin Nelson prominent as the pack moved forward. Armagh defended well but at the expense of a yellow card when a flanker was sent to the 'bin'.

RSD failed to take advantage but closer to the break Evans nipped in to level matters. The same player converted to give the Dungannon lads a 7-5 lead at the break.

It was all to play for in the second half and RSD came close to extending their lead when Perry kicked through after a spillage.

Armagh were forced to carry over but cleared the danger at the ensuing scrum. The frustration of the visitors boiled over minutes later.

Nelson was obstructed at a ruck and that led to a minor 'dust up' before the referee intervened. That said, Armagh with the help of several penalties kept drilling the ball to the corner.

Good RSD defence kept them out and then with just 8 minutes left on the clock Glen Faloon touched down after his No 8 picked up at a scrum. The same player converted to make it 7-12.

In added time, Armagh winger, Nicholas Jennings put the issue beyond doubt when he dived over in the corner. Armagh now meets another 'Royal' when they travel to Enniskillen in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, RSD have another local derby when they host Portadown College in the Schools Bowl competition.
