ROYAL CRASH OUT thumbnailRegent test the RSD defence.

RSD's hopes of a place in the final of the Schools Bowl competition ground to a halt at Newtownards on Saturday morning.

Regent House...13
Dungannon Royal...7

The Dungannon boys could not reproduce the form that saw off Portadown College in the previous round, at least not until the closing stages when a late surge produced a converted try but it was all too little too late. Regent House, who lost to RSD pre Christmas were the better side on the day.

RSD missed a penalty in the first minute before Regent went ahead with a shot on target 5 minutes later.

Using the wind and the driving maul the home side continued to make progress with out-half, Robbie Johnston going close midway through the half.

When the same player landed a ball close to the RSD line fullback, David Maxwell did well to gather and step aside of trouble to land a good touch. Meanwhile, skipper, Aaron McCammon was doing his best to open up the Regent defence.

That looked likely when the hosts lost a forward to the 'sin bin'. Closer to the break RSD were held up on the line and when the ball was released it was spilled in midfield and the half ended 3-0.

When the second half got underway Regent screwed a penalty to the right hand corner. In the initial thrust they were held up and when the ball was released Johnston stepped inside a badly positioned referee to score a try on 43 minutes.

The same player added the conversion and it was beginning to look ominous for RSD. Then 10 minutes from time Johnston landed a penalty to make it 13-0. Gallant RSD then raised their game for a late surge.

Hooker, Timothy Davidson crossed the whitewash for Adam Evans to convert. Despite retaining possession in the dying seconds RSD could get no closer as Regent hung on for a place in the final.
