Swifts ready to make Point in cup quarter

Wednesday, 1 March 2017

DUNGANNON Swifts manager Rodney McAree is taking nothing for granted ahead of their Irish Cup quarter final clash with Championship pacesetters Warrenpoint Town.

The Stangmore Park men were handed what many would have seen as the ideal draw, at home to the only non-Premiership side remaining in the competition.

However, Rodney says he isn't looking any further than this Saturday's clash with the side relegated from the top flight last year.

"It's a favourable draw," says Rodney, "with it being a home draw.

"I look at Warrenpoint as being a Premiership side. They are running away with the league at a canter.

"This game presents a decent opportunity and realistically if you had got anyone apart from Crusaders and maybe Linfield you'd have fancied your chances."

The sides' meeting this weekend is in quite different circumstances to the previous meeting of the clubs.

It was a game mired in controversy, as a ludicrous penalty award to the Swifts in the dying seconds of the last game of the Premiership season saw Warrenpoint condemned to relegation.

Rodney's reign at the Swifts has been marked by steady progress and making the cup final on the 10th anniversary of their only other final appearance would be a significant achievement.

"For Dungannon to progress after having been over 14 years in the Irish League, it's about time they tried to push on and win one of the senior trophies.

"This is an opportunity for us and we have to make the most of it."

The Swifts will be missing a number of players this weekend, however, with midfielder Seanan Clucas and right back Andrew Burns both suspended, while centre back Fra Brennan and wide man Thomas Lockhart are both cup tied.

Dougie Wilson picked up a knock during Saturday's draw with Ards and is a doubt, as is captain Ryan Harpur, who missed Saturday's game with a knee injury.
