FOLLOWING rumours and speculations in recent weeks, the Cookstown and District Motor Cycle Club can confirm, that the ever-popular Guy Martin WILL compete in next months KDM Hire Cookstown "100" which takes place on 28th and 29th April over the Orritor circuit.

The 35-year-old enigmatic road race superstar, equally as famous for his TV appearances, will compete in both the Open and Cookstown "100" feature races on board the all new SP2 Honda Fireblade Superstock machine.

Guy is no stranger to the Orritor circuit and, indeed, no stranger to the podium either, having been victorious in the feature race in 2015.

Having taken a year out of racing to concentrate on the lung-bursting, leg burning mountain bike endurance events, Guy now has to compete in six competitive events in order to race at the IOM TT races and this is good news for Irish road race fans.

Now riding for the Honda team, a deal negotiated by Honda supreme Neil Tuxworth, Guy is now putting his racing at the top of his priorities.

Guy Martin's entry for the KDM Hire Cookstown "100" is a real shot in the arm for Irish road racing, where organising clubs are facing extra financial hardship, due to escalating insurance costs and a reduction in the amount of entries, owing to a change in the rules for the 2017 season.

Entries close this weekend for this event, which will be the second round of the 2017 Ulster and Irish Road Race Championships, and I am glad to say, all classes are almost full.

The Bi Annual Cookstown Motorcycle show continues to gather momentum. Australia's Josh Brookes, the fastest newcomer at the North West "200" and Isle of Man TT and former British Superbike Champion, who has now returned to BSB following a season in World Superbikes, will officially open the show on Saturday 8th April, at 10am.

Well known radio pundit and former right man to the late Robert Dunlop Liam Beckett will compere the chat shows, where amongst the guests will be Glenn Irwin, Josh Elliot and William Dunlop.

There will also be a film show with Derek McIntyre, a close friend of the late Joey Dunlop. Derek travelled with Joey in the heyday of the Formula One championships, so, no doubt, many unseen photos and stories to be told! Keep this date for your diary.

Aghadowey opener

The Opening round of the 2017 Irish Minimoto and Pit Bike championship will be at Aghadowey on Saturday 8th April.

Next Saturday, there will be a Tractor Run organised by up and coming rider, Adam Crooks. This is for the Joey Dunlop Foundation (which provides accommodation for the disabled in the Isle of Man). The run starts at 12 noon at  Dungannon Swifts Football Club grounds. There will be a barbecue for all entrants on return. ALL Tractor drivers are welcome for this worthy cause.

Moto cross

On the moto cross scene, young Lewis Mullen went one step better in his second championship race meeting at Desertmartin. Third at his first attempt, Lewis went one better to take second overall in his class. No doubt, the youngster with a bright future in junior moto cross will be aiming for the top step next time out.

Short circuit season

The 2017 short circuit season kicks into life this weekend with a new-look format of two-day events at Mondello Park. The Masters series will also double up to include the ISB at some of the events, hence creating a more healthier grid.

Local riders in action this weekend include the McAdoo brothers, Stephen and Thomas, both of whom will compete in the Superbike Class. Stephen, despite only a few races last year, has been upgraded to the Pro class.
