Allen roars to victory at St Angelo in first Mini outing thumbnailPhilip Allen on his way to victory in the May Day Stages Rally at St Angelo.

COOKSTOWN driver Philip Allen, son of the late Northern Ireland champion Glenn Allen, roared to victory in his first outing in a Mini John Cooper Works WRC at the May Day Stages Rally at St Angelo, Enniskillen.

The 25-year-old secured the result on only his third rally start and his first time in the ex-works Mini, which is sponsored by Brian and Kieran McCracken of BA Components, Cookstown.

Philip's victory on the May Day Stages coincided with his dad's birthday. Glenn would have been 49. At the finish to welcome him was his proud grandmother, Vera Allen, along with Philip's many friends and supporters.

Philip, who will contest at least two further outings in the Mini, is already making plans to enter a closed roads event with mentor and friend, Eugene Donnelly.

Said Philip: "I plan to hire the Mini for a few more events and I would also like to head to a closed road rally and begin to work on things like pacenotes."

The young Cookstown driver also confirmed that he is currently looking at the idea of switching to an R5 car for next season: "I would like to do a big championship, but I'm not sure which one at the minute.

"If I was going to do something like that, it would have to be in a R5. It seems to be the way to go right now."

Multiple Irish Tarmac Rally champion Eugene Donnelly believes that Philip has a bright future in the sport after navigating him to victory on the May Day Stages.

"Philip has what it takes to compete at a fairly good level," stated the five-time Irish Tarmac winner.

"He is going to be a big talent, definitely. In the right car and with the right help, Philip will only get quicker and quicker."
