TYRONE Towers officials and players have played a leading role in the annual #shehoops tournament held in UUJ over the weekend.

Cindy Murdock, Suin Palmer and Amanda Rice officiated in the competition, while U13 and U14 girls were part of the Northern Ireland team.

Competing against teams from Ireland (Dublin and Cork) as well as squads from Scotland and Wales, round robin pool play on Saturday saw the BNI squads with more wins than losses.

In addition to the girls tournament, Towers also had representatives in the BNI Boys Academy team of Paul O'Neill and Eoin Millar, who competed in three matches against Scotland.

Saturday morning saw Towers' Bronagh Barker compete with the BNI U14 team who had two fantastic wins over both Scotland teams in two very close and thrilling matches.

Fatigue was a major factor then as the BNI squad then struggled to find the energy and the scoring touch to overcome the very strong team from Cork.

This placed the BNI team in a semi final match on Sunday morning versus the team from Dublin, who from the tip took charge of the match and never looked back.

On the U13 side of the tournament, BNI Academy had two teams; BNI Liberty, consisting of Towers' Sorcha McCool and Claire Pinkerton, and BNI Sparks, with Towers' Sarah Quinn and Laura Canning.

All the girls performed exceptionally well and it was BNI Liberty who had the match of the day, scoring an impressive win over the Dublin Comets to put them into a play-off spot on Sunday, while Sunday morning for BNI Sparks was a match vs Wales, in which they won handily.

The U13 final for BNI Liberty vs Dublin Diamonds was tipped to be the match of the tournament.

Only once before had a BNI team lifted the championship, and, in a thrilling match with end to end action, with McCool and Pinkerton contributing on both offense and defence, BNI Liberty held on for a fantastic 28-23 victory to take the #shehoops 2017 U13 championship title.
