Swifts clinch first win of season

DUNGANNON Swifts grabbed their first win of the season away to Ards on Friday night.

Dungannon Swifts...1

It was the result Rodney McAree was desperate for as his side, who had conceded nine goals in three games, kept a clean sheet.

In a scrappy and tense game Dungannon had the first real effort in the 18th minute as Paul McElroy's long range effort dipped narrowly over the cross bar.

Ards responded, through Guillaume Keke, however his one-on-one effort was aimed straight at Addis. Former Swifts player Gary Liggett's headed effort to Stuart Addis and Ryan Harpur cleared.

The game came to life in the second half when Ards were reduced to 10 men.

David Elebert brought down Ryan Mayse as the Swifts' forward run at the Ards backline. The defender was on a yellow card and the challenge drew a second booking.

Dungannon grabbed the game's only goal from the resulting free-kick. Harpur touched the ball to Wilson, whose left-foot shot deflected off the wall, giving the goalkeeper little chance.

Speaking after the game a delighted Swifts boss Rodney McAree said: "What pleased me most was our sheer determination to win, to get the three points.

"When your coming off the back of three staright defeats and your next game is away to Ards on a Friday night.

"It is not as as that Colin Nixon has Ards well-drilled and they made it difficult for us.

"There was a stroke of luck about out goal but over the 90 minutes I thought we earned it.

"I thought we just about shaded the game."
