DUNGANNON Swifts grabbed a vital three points at home to Ballymena United on Saturday in controversial circumstances.

Leroy Millar grabbed the games first goal for the visitors when his free kick from the side of the box travelled into the bottom corner of the net.

Minutes later United almost grabbed a second when Chris Lowe headed over the bar from a Ballymena United corner.

The visitors maintained their pressure and would have doubled their lead but for a goal line clearance after Faulkner met a Cullough cross.

Despite the pressure the Swifts held on and in the 66th minute the referee, Keith Kennedy, reduced Ballymena to 10 men.

McElroy worked his way into the box and got and put the ball across goal, Harpur met the ball at the back post but his effort was blocked by William Faulkner.

It was blocked with his hand and the penalty was awarded.

McElroy converted from the sport and from the restart the Swifts made their advantage pay.

Just a minute and a half after scoring from the spot, the Swifts grabbed their second when Alan Teggart teed up Mayse who slotted home from six yards.

McElroy went close twice more, having a dipping shot touched over by Ballymenas goalkeeper, Brennan, before having an effort superbly blocked by Brennan following an indirect free-kick awarded in the box.

Speaking after the game, Swifts boss Rodney McAree was delighted with his sides approach.

For us to kick on and improve on last season we have to challenge ourselves and improve in games like these, he said.

After the results we have recently and being one nil down at half time it was a massive three points for us.
