Moygashel man bags British title thumbnailMark Kerr after winning his first professional title on Sunday night.

MOYGASHEL'S Mark Kerr has become the first kickboxer from Mid-Ulster to ever win a professional British championship.

The 26-year-old tree surgeon had just over a week to prepare for the fight in Sunderland on Sunday night past, but he overcame the odds to win the professional WKA British title at 83kg.

It is the latest and by far most significant title victory for Kerr, who fights out of Dungannon Kickboxing Club.

He beat the reigning champion Stuart Roper on his home patch over seven rounds on a split decision.

And his coach, Stuart Kirk has stated his pride at seeing his fighter, who has been under his tutelage for several years, earn a stunning win.

"It's absolutely unbelievable," Stuart told the Courier.

"We had only found out  10 days before  that Mark was going to fight after the original challenger got injured.

"We got sparring partners in from all over Northern Ireland and we did it against all odds.

"To do it in just over a week's notice is something else.

"This is the biggest achievement ever for both me and Mark in kickboxing."

Mark entered the fight aggressively, landing a few big hits on his English opponent, before settling into a rhythm and largely controlling the fight.

"The game plan was to make sure we could hit him on the chin and rock him and he did that, then he settled down to try to win every round which I felt he did, although one judge disagreed.

"It was Mark's first ever fully professional fight and he has done a wonderful job."

After a glittering amateur career, Mark now looks set to emulate his achievements on the professional stage.

A second DKC fighter was in action in Sunderland, David Frizelle taking on an experienced fighter and coming out narrowly on the wrong end of the judges' decision.
