Keady men to the Max in East Tyrone League

Wednesday, 6 December 2017

IT was definitely a long time coming but, at the sixth time of asking, last year's impressive league champions finally rediscovered their winning ways when they overcame visiting Gervin's on Thursday night.

Indeed, Max Keady were only a black ball away from a whitewash win over a Coalisland side that fought hard and were entitled to feel that they maybe deserved to go home with more than a point.

It was an absorbing contest, Ronan Wilson producing a 22 clearance to win his second frame against Mark Nugent and then winning the decider.

Dan Nixon ran Shane McQuillan close in their third frame, Stevie McParland and Stevie Taylor the other home winners.

RTM Mortgage Services League Cup leaders Mitchell's A were the big winners as they proved too strong for Aughnacloy A, Cookstown captain Joe Loughran lead by example as he fired a 79 break to force a decider against visiting skipper Paddy Quinn, who went in-off the re-spotted black ball.

On a good night for the Ardcumber Road Club, Mitchell's INF earned a worthy draw away to second-placed McVeighs, Terry Dunlop and Gary McNeill responding after the home team led 2-0 through Kieran Corr and Jerome McVeigh.

And Mitchells B came through a tough test away to McKee's A by securing three of the four available points. Owen McKee upheld the good reputation of his Gortgonis club by beating Kevin Kelly but the other games went to Niall Tennyson, Peter Loughran and Jonny McCurry.

The semi-final line-up in the Kildress Plumbing Supplies Division Three competition has been sorted out.

Next Thursday night McKee's B and Aughnacloy C will be favourites to go through to the final at the expense of Aughnacloy D and Mitchell's D.

In the concluding sectional matches last week, McKee's defeated Aughnacloy C 3-1 and Mitchells D brilliantly sparked to life against visiting Aughnacloy D with a 4-0 win.

McVeigh's A on top
What a dramatic night it was in the RTM Mortgage Services Division One League Cup, with 4-1 wins by McVeigh's A and McKee's A meaning that three teams finished equal top on 17 points.
That triggered a frenetic scrutiny of the results to see which teams would fill the two qualifying spots in the knockout semi-finals and which would be left to hope for better fortune as they bid for glory in the Shield competition.
The end result of the deliberations is that McVeigh's A top the group because they had beaten both the other teams, while Max Keady finished second since they had defeated McKee's A.
The Gortgonis A team now entertain Gervin's again next week and McKee's B host Mitchell's A in the play-offs for the League winners to meet the bottom two teams in the semi-finals of that competition a week later.
The battle for qualifying spots from Division Two took a twist as well on Wednesday night with McKee's C winning 4-1 away to Mitchell's B to close the gap to the minimum and Mitchell's INF beating McVeigh's B 5-0 to give themselves real hope of catching the top two.
