McElroy stars as Swifts shock Ards thumbnailSwifts boss Rodney McAree is delighted to return to winning ways.

A WELL-TAKEN rebound was enough to secure a vital three points for Dungannon Swifts against Ards.

Dungannon Swifts...1

While many in the stands pre-match were eager to get a glimpse of the Swifts' new signing Daniel Hughes in action, an admin error delayed his debut.

However, in his absence Paul McElroy took the opportunity to be the name on the home fan's lips as he grabbed the game's only goal.

Stuart Addis was also something of a hero for the Swifts as he reacted well to deny Ards from the spot in the 75th minute.

It was a much deserved win for the Swifts, who created most of the chances in an entertaining game and after a run of three disappointing results, it will have been exactly what Swifts boss Rodney McAree was looking for.

It was a scoreless first half but it still provided some entertainment.

In the 10th minute a Dungannon move broke down when Patton's shot was blocked by defender Callum Byers.

Ards countered swiftly through the impressive David McAllister who drove from his own half through the Swifts backline before being denied by Addis the rebound fell to Cameron Stewart who looked set to give the visitors the lead but somehow skewed his effort over.

Shortly before the break Lafferty came close to breaking the deadlock, timing his run into the box to perfection but his effort from Burke's cross rebounded off the post and into Sam Johnstone's arms.

The second half was only seven minutes old when the Swifts took the lead. Lafferty rose highest to head a Burke corner towards goal the effort was parried by Johnstone, it fell to McElory who turned onto his left foot.

His powerful effort beat Ryan Neale on the line and the Swifts took the lead.

Chances were few and far between after the goal. However the swifts must have thought they had blown it in the 75th minute as Armstrong clipped the legs of Frazer in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Keke stepped up but Addis got down sharply to his right to deny the Ards sub.

Ards felt they should have a second penalty but the referee was not interessted when Michael McClellan was challenged in the box.

Speaking after the match Swifts boss Rodney McAree was delighted with the win and expressed his desire for more of the same.

"The result gives everyone a huge lifet," said Rodney.

"To see Paul (McElroy) grab a goal and to keep a clean sheet is really good, but we need to build on this and kick on.

"I thought we got a bit nervous towards the end, but that is perhaps to be expected given our resuls recently.

"I thought we were very good at times and I don't think the result flatters us."
