DUNGANNON SWIFTS were outclassed as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat against league leaders Crusaders at Seaview on Saturday.

A second half brace from Gavin Whyte resigned the Swifts to defeat after Colin Coates' first half header had given the home side the lead.

The cup holders held off early pressure from a Crusaders side looking to bounce back from their loss against rivals Cliftonville in their last league game.

The warning signs deepened when Andy Coleman hit the woodwork, but it was a momentary relief as Coates ran in on a cross to head home after 34 minutes.

The second half was much of the same as Crusaders dominated proceedings, before finally doubling their advantage on 70 minutes when Whyte's low shot slipped under the body of Swifts 'keeper Andy Coleman.

Whyte doubled his tally and ensured the victory with three minutes left when he nipped in front of a Swifts defender before running in on goal and slipping the ball home to leave it 3-0 at the end.

The result leaves Dungannon in ninth position following a run of three consecutive losses and only one win in four since their cup triumph.

Swifts host third placed Glenavon next at Stangmore Park on Friday, 23 March and only a victory will keep manager Rodney McAree's hopes off a top six finish alive going into the final game of the season, before the league splits.
