Two titles for Cookstown boxers thumbnail

ON Saturday last, Cookstown had two boys competing in the Finals of the Irish Championships.

They were Youth 1 Pat McDonagh and Youth 2 Craig Bigger and what a Championship they had with both boys bringing home titles.

Everyone at the club were delighted with both boys. Coach Chalky Kelly was over the moon with how the boys performed

 Pat McDonagh {Cookstown BC ] v T.Doherty {Baldoyle BC Dublin].

The opening round was a close affair with both boys testing each other with some good boxing McDonagh won the opener on the virtue of a better left jab.

In the second McDoagh opened up and showed what he could do, taking the fight to his opponent and scoring often to the body.

It was McDonagh's round in the the third, even though Donaghy took the fight to McDonagh, but he could not upset McDonagh who went on to win the third.

McDonagh was crowned The 80 kilos youth Champion much to the delight of his family and supporters.

Craig Bigger [CookstownBC] v P.Downey [St John Bosco's BC Belfast]

In this bout, young Bigger was under great pressure having just watched McDonagh triumph.

However, if he felt the pressure, he certainly did not show it, he boxed like a veteran using the ring well he out boxed his opponent in the first.

Young Craig used his greater speed cleverly outboxing his man in the first round and the second round followed the same pattern.

Bigger was in complete control. In the third round Bigger showed his class taking the bout to his man and not only out scored him but also out punched his man.

At the end of the bout he was able to join his clubmate in lifting the Irish Championship much to the delight of all all his supporters.

Speaking after the bouts, Head Coach Chalky Kelly thanked everyone who travelled down to Dublin in support of the two boys and the club Chalky said that the boys and the club really appreciate everyone from their main sponsers MOE'S Bar to the general public who have supported them all year round.
