New champion for Cookstown

Wednesday, 18 April 2018

ON Friday past Cookstown Boxing Club gained a new Irish Champion when Seamus Maughan Was crowned champion on a 5/0 decision.

This is a a great achievement in Seamus' first competitive season. Seamus fought a very clever bout backing off and bringing his opponent onto his punches.

Seamus won the first round and, in the second, he changed his tactics and took the fight to his man and once again won that round clearly.

In the third round Seamus ruled the roost and went on to lift his first Irish title.

On this form it wont be his last.

Unfortunately the week was not all success when three of Seamus' club mates where knocked out of the Championships.

The biggest disappointment was the loss of the 'Pocket Rocket' P. Hanna. Paul lost his bout on a 3/2 spilt decision in what was a very dubious decision everyone though Paul had done enough to have won.

However, much to his disappointment he was adjudged to have lost.

Make no mistake Paul will be back bigger and better than ever. The other two boys Charles McDonagh and Bernie McDonagh boxed extremely well but lost out to their opponents both lost on spilt decisions.

Next Friday will see the club box on two fronts.

They will box in tournaments staged in Coleraine and Raphoe Co.Donegal. Craig Bigger will box in Coleraine but, as we go to press, his opponent is not known.

Teo Alin will box in Raphoe for a Raphoe select against an English Select his opponent will be the Northern Area Champion.
