Currie too hot for opposition to take Cookstown individual title

Wednesday, 9 May 2018

THE Cookstown Individual Snooker League competition got off to a blistering start with the lower half of the draw being completely played down to the final.
Enda O'Hagan raced into a 3-0 lead in the semi-final against Brian Milne, but this was short-lived when the vast experience of the of Milne saw him charge back.
He proved too strong when he out-potted his opponent to reach the final.
The other half of the draw took a while to arrange but eventually the other semi-final was played, between Tony Corry and Paul Currie.
A good contest was in prospect as Tony has vastly improved his game but on this occasion Currie had to make several clearances before he claimed victory to book his place in the Cookstown Individual final.
This best of nine frames clash was played in the Ardcumber Snooker Club.
Currie hit the ground running as he secured the first two frames, but alas for him, he couldn't sustain the pressure as Milne took the next three to move ahead.
The safety play was top drawer and they played some outstanding snooker.
After eight frames, the score was level at 4-4, meaning a decider frame would be necessary to crown the winner.
Safety once again came into operation and Currie just edged it in the important shots to be awarded the title of Cookstown Individual champion.
This is Paul Currie's second individual title, but will he be able to defend his title next season? Watch this space.
A special mention goes to all players who entered the tournament and also to the Ardcumber Club for staging this event and to Seamus Mitchell for his much appreciated hospitality throughout the league and individual events.
Thanks have also been extended to Thomas McCrea who expertly refereed the semis and the final of the Cookstown Snooker Opern Individual Championships.
