Johnston seals the deal with birdie finale thumbnail

COMPETITION at Moyola Park last week was intense in the blistering heat. The Monthly Medal sponsored by O'Brien's Pharmacy took place on Saturday and was won by Tony Johnston (12) who shot eight pars and a birdie in his last 10 holes to record a 65.
Johnston was confirmed the winner by a single shot from the trailing pack on 66, which needed a countback to separate.
Terry Robb was declared second and Mark Watters (2) third. Tony's birdie on the tough par five last hole provided a real winner this time.
Last Wednesday the Cosmo Parking Ladies Open was playing in fine conditions after the very heavy rain on Tuesday. The winners had to be separated on countback all shooting a fine 38 points with Maura Creelman (24) collecting the win from Marie Kyne (28) second and Marion Diamond (39) third.
Two of the teams were battling in Ulster club competitions on Sunday. The Junior Cup team, led by Captain Liam Craig, returned to Omagh where they qualified for the knockout stages to face Silverwood who qualified above them at this venue earlier in the month.
Liam and the guys put in an outstanding performance returning a very strong 5-0 result to reach the last 16 where they will face Fortwilliam.
John McCloy's Ulster Cup team travelled to the auspicious surrounding of Royal Belfast for the first leg of their match as they seek a quarter final spot.
Royal Belfast's notoriously fast difficult greens with firm approaches always present a difficult challenge and so it was for John's team. The team acquitted themselves well with the majority of matches going to the 17th or beyond to be decided.
They came away with a credible 2-5 result and look forward to the second leg at Moyola Park next week.
The course is benefitting from the great weather we are having at the moment and things are shaping up nicely for Open Week which commences on Saturday 7th July.
Times are still available for competitions throughout the week which provide a fine opportunity to play this outstanding Mid-Ulster gem.
